How Ohio’s Breath Testing Machines Work
When a suspected DUI/OVI driver submits a breath sample into a breath-testing machine, infrared energy is transmitted through the chamber containing the breath sample. Alcohol molecules absorb infrared energy, and the machine is able to measures the amount of infrared energy absorbed. Based upon the quantity absorbed, the machine performs a calculation to ascertain the concentration of alcohol in the breath sample. The machine then prints out the result on a piece of paper, with the blood alcohol content expressed in grams of alcohol per 210 ml of breath.
